'The Nest' is a local ministry that reaches out to the homeless of Birmingham. Several nights a week many underprivileged men, women, and children gather under one of the bridges in downtown to be served a hot meal. The ministry began many years ago and different churches from our area share in the responsibility for preparing the meals, delivering them downtown, and then serving the homeless. Agape has the privilege of being a part of this wonderful outreach on the 4th Tuesday of each month.

In the Fall of 2006, nurses from Agape began volunteering their time to provide basic medical services to those in need. To the Glory of our God, we have watched Him bless this ministry over and over. We now have an amazing group of medical professionals who travel with us, including doctors, nurses and eye exam specialists, to sit down one on one with the individuals and discuss their health needs. Through the resources God has provided we are able to supply them with over the counter medication, eye glasses, sanitary supplies and give them information on how to receive more specialized care if needed.

Most importantly, our volunteers are able to walk around and talk to the people who are present. We hear some amazing stories and in many cases we make friends. We see familiar faces each time we go to The Nest and are able to pick back up on conversations that we had previously. During certain times of the year there may be a special occasion to be celebrated such as the Christmas party which lasts several hours and includes a Christmas Tree for our friends to decorate.

Our hearts go out to each and every person that we meet at The Nest and we always wish that we could do more to help their physical needs. Our goal, however, is that we have an opportunity  to be able to share Jesus Christ with those who desperately need to know how much God loves them. Many of those that we meet are in dire situations and feel hopeless, but each week they get a reminder of just how much God loves them. Lives have been changed and people have come to know Jesus as their Savior through this mission work. Please make plans to join us on the 4th Tuesday of each month. There is always a need for chaperones, servers, or those to prepare the food at the church (and clean up). Please contact us for more details on how you can help with this ministry!
